Email builder: Email style settings

The Email style panel controls

the global appearance of your message. Open it by clicking the Email style icon

in the right panel when nothing is selected on the canvas. Settings here are

inherited by all structures and elements unless you override them at the

individual element level. When you create a new message, these settings are

pre-filled from your Brand kit.

Support tip  Configure your Email style settings before adding structures and elements. Everything you add afterwards inherits these defaults, which means far less manual styling per element.

Email

Controls the overall layout of your email:

  • Width, the content width in pixels. The default is 600px, which works well across desktop, webmail, and mobile clients. We recommend staying between 600 and 700px.
  • Alignment, left, centre, or right. Centre is the default and works for most designs.
  • Background colour, the colour visible around and behind your content. Default is light grey #f1f1f1.
  • Content background colour, the background of your actual content area. Default is white (#ffffff). This colour is inherited by all structures automatically.

Text

Sets the default font family, font size, and text colour for all text elements in your email. Individual text elements can override these defaults. The default is Arial, 14px, black #000000.

Sets the default colour for links in text and list elements. You can also choose whether links should be underlined by default.

Headings

Sets default font, size, and colour for each heading level (H1, H2, H3). Each level can be configured independently.

Buttons

Sets the default styling for all button elements, background colour, text colour, font, padding, and border radius. Individual buttons can override these defaults.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Setting up Email style after already adding elements. Changes to Email style after elements are added don't retroactively override individual element settings that were already configured. Set up Email style first.
  • Setting content width above 700px. Wider layouts may not render correctly in some email clients and typically display with horizontal scroll bars on mobile.
  • Not configuring the Brand kit before creating messages. If your Brand kit is set up correctly, Email style is pre-filled and you rarely need to touch it. See Settings > Brand kit.
  • Overriding Email style on every individual element. Consistent design requires consistent defaults. Use Email style for your brand defaults and only override at the element level when a specific design choice requires it.

Next steps

  • Check Settings > Brand kit to confirm your brand colours and fonts are configured, these pre-fill your Email style settings for every new message.
  • See "Email builder: content elements" for the elements that inherit these styles.
  • See "Email builder: structures" for structure-level settings like padding and background colours.
