Interests are one great way to categorise and group your contacts. Click here to learn more about interests.
To follow the steps in this article you must have your interests already. Click here to learn how to create an interest.
Assign interests at import
If you want to add interests to your contacts using an import, you have to make sure to correctly set up your spreadsheet. You can add interests to existing contacts or import new contacts with certain interests.
- In your spreadsheet, create a column, where the header of your column has the name Interest label(s).
- In the field, sum up the interest label(s) you want your contact to have, separated by a comma.
- Import your contacts as usual and link the column with the header Interest label(s) to the database field Interest labels.
Interest labels are case sensitive. Upper and lowercase must be exactly the same in order to import the data correctly.
Edit the interests of an existing contact
When you enter the contact's information, you can scroll down to the Interests and click on Edit to add or remove interests. You can add interests by selecting a new interest from the drop-down list or just type in the desired interest.
You can also remove an interest, just by clicking on the cross next to the name of that interest. When you are satisfied with your changes, click on Save.
Create a segment based on interests
Click here to see a detailed tutorial how to create a segment.
Your rule should be set up like this:
- For the Trigger, make sure Interests is selected
- For the Field, make sure your interest is selected - in this case Accessoires
- For the Function, choose between three options depending on which contacts you would like to add.
- Is member of - in this case this will be the last trigger
- Is member of with x clicks
- Is no member of
- The Value, is only relevant if you went with the second option "Is member of with x clicks". Here, type in manually the number of clicks on an interest link that you want to make sufficient to put that contact in the segment.
Assign interests automatically via Link Tracking
Link Tracking works similarly in our three message builders. The Link Tracking button is always available in the editing mode of your message. Flexmail will analyse your message and make a list of all available link.
In the Link Tracking management, you can rename your link, turn on tracking and Google Analytics. Here, you can also associate each link to one interest. That way each contact will automatically be part of the connected interest once they click on that link.
To assign the interest to your link just use the dropdown to select the label, then click on Save to apply the changes.
The links themselves and the Link Tracking settings should NOT be changed after you send the campaign. If you change them, the results in the reports would not be correct.
Send a campaign based on interests
Click here to see a detailed tutorial how to launch an email campaign.
After setting up the first step of the campaign, you are able to choose which segments, interests and/or preference lists will receive your campaign. If you choose an interest, the campaign will be sent to all the contacts in your database, who have this specific interest.
Alternatively, you also have the option to exclude certain segments, interest labels and preferences by clicking on the Exclude button. Your campaign will not be sent to the contacts you have chosen to exclude.
Create a workflow based on interests
Interests can be very useful in workflows as well. You can start a workflow with contacts who have a specific interest. There are a lot of reasons on why you want to use interests in workflows. Here you can find out, how you can use them.
Click here to see the general tutorial how to create a workflow.
Let’s start with the start block. In the start block you will have to choose all the contacts that will be added to the workflow, based on various triggers. To add contacts with an interest, open the Contacts tab, then select Contacts that are added to an interest and you will automatically go to the next step.
As you can see you also have to option “contacts that are removed from an interest”. Use this when you want to take immediate action if a contact decides he is no longer interested in this interest.
On the next screen, select the particular interest that will trigger the workflow. You may also opt to add not only to contacts who are new participants in the interest but the ones who had the interest already. To include those check the mark in front of Include all contacts that are already a member of the interest label(s). Click on Save to continue.
In the flow actions, you have the possibility to add an if/else condition. Under the Contacts tab, you can ask if your contact belongs to one or more interests. Based on that answer, the contacts will move to the yes or no side of the condition.
Last but not least, you can also add or remove an interest in the workflow. This can be set with the contact actions.
